ABOUT US
Our group was founded out of a shared vision during the Christmas festivities in December 2015. Families of the Eganzas, Muchilwas, Namasakas, and M’mbifwas, gathered and conceived the idea of creating a social and economic network for people from western Kenya living in the United States, particularly in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area.
Following a series of dedicated meetings, this vision became a reality with the official registration of Texas Umoja, a non-profit organization symbolizing unity in Texas (Umoja means “unity” in Kiswahili).
As we celebrate our 9th year of steady growth and progress this year, Texas Umoja celebrates its members and the progress made.
Our Core Values
Integrity:
As a community, we strive to act honorably. We believe that individuals with integrity adhere to moral and ethical principles in all aspects of life. This is the cornerstone of our long-term success and the foundation of what it means to be a Texas Umoja member.
Fair Treatment and Respect:
We believe treating others with respect makes this world a better place to live in, whether it’s at home, or out in our community.
Inclusivity:
As a community, we recognize that we have a diverse group of people, and we embrace and value the diversity of all our members. This is what makes us stronger and creative.
Our progress today includes, scholarship project (Somesha Watoto) that seeks to educate children in Kenya who are in desperate need of the support. Umoja Enterprise LLC that provides economic independence to the members. Benevolence Fund, that supports members financially during death of a family member. Merry go round, that has seen many members benefit from it. We hold community events that has seen families coming together to celebrate each other and have a good time as a way of promoting mental health. United we thrive!
